Philmont - Itinerary 9 - Day 1 - Six Mile Gate to Anasazi Camp, Tuesday, August 1, 2006
Day 1, Six Mile Gate (elevation 6800) to Anasazi Camp (elevation
7000). Total distance about 1.5 miles.
Our first hiking day was very easy. Dan, our ranger, spent
quite a bit of time reviewing "the Philmont way" to hike and
set up camp. Dan's supervisor observed all of Dan's
presentation, and he was wating for use at Anasazi Camp
when we arrived to watch and listen to Dan's presentation
there as well. Dan did an
excellent job - I'm sure he is one of their better rangers.
One of the first things Dan had us do was to have each
person tell about their boots. When everyone was done
he said "Now that you know everthing about everyone's
boots you don't need to stare at them all the time. Keep
some distance from each other and watch the scenery."
The highlight of today's hike was the visit to the world's only
T-Rex fossilized track.
Anasazi Camp was a trail camp which meant that we were
on our own. Like many of these camps
it was very spread out. The water source was a
solar
powered well that was located several hundred yards away
on the other side of the river. One of the things I would have
done differently for this trip would be to bring a couple of 1.5
gallon water containers to make it easier to get and treat water.
