Philmont - Itinerary 9 - Day 2 - Anasazi Camp to Old Camp, Wednesday, August 2, 2006
Day 2, Anasazi Camp (elevation 7000 feet) to Old Camp (elevation
7300 feet). Total distance about 7 miles.
Today was an interesting day. At about 2 miles into our hike
to Old Camp we stopped at Indian Writings. This is a staffed
camp where the staff gave us a tour of several Indian
petroglyphs as well an excavated Indian pithouse and
slabhouse. Eric, the staffer who gave the tour had lots of
good information, and his delivery style was very interesting.
We ate lunch and hiked out of Indian Writings at about 1:00 PM.
While the morning was beautiful, the clouds were moving in
and we knew we were in for rain (the weather forcast was
the same every day of the trip - clear and sunny in the mornings
with thunderstorms and rain in the afternoon).
It started to rain very hard, and, because of lightning, our group was spread out with
at least 20 feet separating each hiker. There were several
stream crossings, and we finally came to one that was too
fast to cross - this was after the firs
half of our crew had already crossed
it. So we ended up waiting about 2 hours for the rain to stop
and the water level to go back down so that we could get the
crew back together.
Old Camp was a trail camp that was very spread out. The
red roof inn and well were quite a distance from where we
camped, and the bear bags were hung accross a stream with
no easy crossing. But the camp was in a meadow and was
beautiful.
