Philmont - Itinerary 9 - Day 4 - Dan Beard Camp to Rich Cabins, Friday, August 4, 2006
Day 4, Dan Beard (elevation 7900 feet) to Rich Cabins
(elevation 7900 feet). Total distance about 7 miles.
We had a choice today, we could follow a fence line to an
abandoned railroad grade, and follow this to Rich Cabins.
There would be some steep downhill
sections to get to the camp and no trail for most of the way,
but the total distance would only be about 1.5 miles.
The "official" trail was over 7 miles long.
We opted for the official trail which was longer, but gave us
easy hiking. Rich Cabins was a staffed cabin with a "homestead"
theme. The activity for the scouts and advisors were able to
help clean out the barn, milk
a cow, and catch chickens. There was a crew of girls who
were completing a 23 day trek; they spend the evening in
the loft of the barn. I think I would have preferred my tent.
We were able to resupply at this camp. Also the camp had
washtubs and scrub-boards so we could clean our clothes.
There was a teeter-totter made
from a log. While
the staff warned the scouts to be careful,
one of the scouts hurt his knee while playing on it (I won't
mention any names). Fortunately he recovered quickly and
was able to continue hiking.
