Philmont - Itinerary 9 - Day 5 - Rich Cabins to Greenwood Canyon Trail Camp, Saturday, August 5, 2006
Day 5, Rich Cabins (elevation 7900 feet) to Greenwood
Canyon Camp (elevation 8400 feet). Total distance about 6 miles.
The trail to Greenwood Canyon continued up the Middle
Ponil Creek. This area (as was Rich Cabins) is outside of
the land owned by the Boy Scouts and is part of the Valle
Vidal. Because of this, the trail camps have no prepared
sumps, fire rings, or set cables for our bear bags. The
theme for camping in this area is "leave no trace".
The camping area for Greenwood Canyon was spread out
along a stream that was our souce of water. There were
several crews camped along the stream, and we ended up
camping at the far end of the camp which actually put us
closer to our next destination of Cooper Park.
The afternoon thunder storm lasted into the evening, so we
ate tomorrows lunch for dinner and therefore avoided the
need to cook and clean dishes.
