Philmont - Itinerary 9 - Day 6 - Greenwood Canyon Trail Camp to Copper Park Camp, Sunday, August 6, 2006
Day 6, Greenwood Canyon Camp (elevation 8400 feet) to
Copper Park Camp (elevation 10,400). Total distance
about 7 miles.
Today's hike proved to be the most difficult of the trip so
far. We had about 3000 feet elevation gain (to about 11,200
feet) before we dropped back down to Copper Park Camp.
Fortunately there was a newly openned trail that switched
backed several times that was much easier that the original
trail that went straight down the mountain. It started raining
as soon as we reached the saddle that marked the highest
point of the day's hike, and we ended
up setting up camp in the rain after dropping down to
Copper Park Camp.
During the trek to Copper Park Camp, Mr. Tomaske took
pictures of many different types of mushrooms that we saw
today. We are starting to believe that this area is really is a
rain forest.
After setting up camp we put 2 dinners together and made as
much food as we could. We had no problem finishing
dinner. Since it was raining when we ar
ived, we decided
to postpone our side trip to French Henry camp were we
were to participate in gold panning, blacksmithing, and to
go on a mine tour.
