Philmont - Itinerary 9 - Day 10 - Pueblano Camp to Ponil Camp, Thursday August 10, 2006
Day 10, Pueblano Camp (elevation 8100) to Ponil Camp
(elevation 7200 feet).
Total distance about 6 miles.
We took the road from Pueblano Camp to Ponil Camp, and
by the time we reached Ponil we were ready to get rid of
the burros. I think even Michael, who was Little John's best
friend, was happy to see them go.
At Ponil Camp, the scouts were able to go horseback riding,
play horseshoes, and relax at the cantina. Also the
scouts were able to get items branded with the different
Philmont brands. Items like belts, hats, water bottles, pieces
of wood, and boots were most commonly branded.
There were humming bird feeders on the one of the porches,
and there were always 5 or 6 humming birds gathered
around them.
The highlight of the camp were the chuckwagon dinner and
breakfast provided for the crews. It was great not to have
to prepare meals, and both meals were pretty much all you
can eat.
The staff put on a really good show in the evening in the
cantina, a
d the camp had showers and sinks with washboards
so we could wash our clothes.
