Philmont - Itinerary 9 - Day 11 - Ponil Camp to Ponil Turnaround, Friday August 11, 2006
Day 11, Ponil Camp (elevation 7200 feet) to Ponil
Turnaround (elevation 7100 feet).
Total distance about one-half mile.
This was our final day of hiking, but there really wasn't much
hiking. We only had to go half a mile and wait for the bus
to pick us up.
The Advisors cooked breakfast, and everyone enjoyed
eating as much as they wanted.
Everyone packed up and took it easy until we left the camp.
It only took about 20 minutes to reach the spot where the
bus would pick us up.
Once we got back to headquarters, we checked in and
received our tent assignments - we were now in the
returning crew section. After returning our crew gear, we
packed up and relaxed the rest of the afternoon.
The highlight of the day was the church service that was
held in the evening. It was held in an amphitheater that
faced a beautiful field with a mesa in the background. There
were deer wandering in the field, and birds flying
overhead. There was a thunder storm moving acc
oss
the sky in the distance. It was a really beautiful scene.
The trip home was uneventful. We travelled back to
Albuquerque in anothr van-trailer combination instead of
a bus - this was fine with us as the van is much faster.
We had to wait about 2 hours at the airport. There was
a "travel alert" and we could not bring any items containing
fluids in our carry-on items. This was not a big deal as all we
had to do was put these items in our backpacks before we
checked them in. There
were security personal who wandered the departure area
inspecting people's carry-on luggage. They seemed to
really like to check boy scouts. At least 3 of our scouts had
their daypacks inspected while we were waiting.
